Doc Sadler out recruiting over Christmas break

December 29, 2008 by Bret Nellor, under 2009 Recruiting Class.

Vee Sanford

Nebraska basketball coach Doc Sadler took a trip out to Lexington, KY over the Christmas break to visit with his good friend Billy Gillespie and also get a close look at Lexington Catholic senior Vee Sanford.

Sanford, a 6-3 guard has scholarship offers from Nebraska, St. Louis, and Toledo according to the linked article. Rivals.com reports that Kentucky, Bradley, and Miami-OH have offered. Should Sanford eventually sign with the Huskers he would join 6-10 center Vander Joaquim, 6-8 forward Christian Standhardinger, 6-9 forward Brandon Ubel, and 6-2 guard Rayes Gallegos as the 5th member of the 2009 recruiting class.

Huskers Nab Third Oral Commit For 2009 Class

September 16, 2008 by Bret Nellor, under 2009 Recruiting Class, Recruiting.

Doc Sadler and the Huskers have received an oral commitment from Rayes Gallegos a 6-2 guard from suburban Salt Lake City, UT. According to the Omaha World-Herald, Gallegos has seen his profile rise  through his play with his Utah Pump-N-Run White AAU team.

Apparently he’s a fan of the Big 12 and is looking forward to competing with the league’s best. This is a good thing for Coach Sadler since Gallegos has received interest from UCLA, Utah, Utah State, San Diego State, Colorado State and Weber State. He’ll be making an official visit to NU on Sept. 26-27.

He joins 6-10 Vander Joaquim and 6-9 Brandon Ubel as the third member of the Husker’s 2009 recruiting class. Nebraska still has 2 scholarships open for 2009.

Husker Recruit Joaquim Changing High Schools

September 11, 2008 by Bret Nellor, under 2009 Recruiting Class, 2010 Recruiting Class, Recruiting.

Vander Joaquim

SignOnSanDiego.com reports today that Vander Joaquim is leaving Christian High School in San Diego to attend Mountain State Academy in Beckley, West Virginia. Joaquim was recruited to Nebraska by new Assistant Coach Walter Roese. Doc Sadler and Roese surely convinced Vander that the move would benefit him through playing against more talented and competetive opponents.

Mountain State Academy is a private, college prepatory high school. While researching the school, I discovered that Nebraska is looking at another player at the school. That player is Kofi Mensa, a 6-4 shooting guard. Currently a junior, the Toronto, Canada native is being pursued by Marshall, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, North Carolina St., Nebraska, and Akron which has already offered him a scholarship.

Video of Brandon Ubel available on Rivals

August 21, 2008 by Bret Nellor, under 2009 Recruiting Class, Recruiting, Video.

Discovered a highlight video was posted on recent Husker commit Brandon Ubel’s Rivals profile page. For some reason I was able to view it earlier today, but now it’s locked down and only available for viewing by Rivals subscribers. Or you can sign up for a free account that lasts 7 days.

From what I saw, Ubel looks like he has a good shooting touch for a big guy from outside the arc. There were a couple moments where he displayed ability to put the ball on the floor and take it at the hoop as well as some post moves, but it looks like his bread and butter is his ability to score from the outside.

Ubel becomes Nebraska’s second commitment for 2009

August 13, 2008 by Bret Nellor, under 2009 Recruiting Class, Recruiting.

Brandon Ubel

Brandon Ubel has accepted the Husker’s scholarship offer and joins Vander Joaquim, as the 2nd commit for thier 2009 class. At 6-9, 220, he expects to float between the 3 and 4 positions for NU.

According to Ubel, “I can step out and shoot the 3, I can take people off the dribble and post up.” Of course I’m sure the first thing Coach Sadler will do is make sure he understands that his ability to play defense will determine his playing time. It also appears that he is a solid student with a 4.1 GPA and intends to study broadcast journalism in Lincoln.

Ubel chose Nebraska over Marquette, Stanford, Drake, Illinois State and Utah State. The fact that his sister runs track at UNL was a factor in his decision. Turns out he accepted the scholarship offer when he took his visit to the school last week. Doesn’t hurt to play the family card huh?

With commitments from Ubel and Joaquim, a top 100 prospect according to ESPN, the Huskers have one scholarship left which has been offered to Jarrell Crayton from Bellevue, NE.

Coach Sadler looking at Kansas City area talent for 2009 class

August 11, 2008 by Bret Nellor, under 2009 Recruiting Class, Recruiting.

Doc Sadler took an opportunity to view some Kansas City area talent at an AAU tournament in Shawnee, KS. With news last week of a scholarship offer for Brandon Ubel, it seems that the Kansas City area is an area of focus for the Huskers as they are putting together their 2009 recruiting class.

Ivo Baltic profile on Scout.com

Ivo Baltic is another player that Coach Sadler scouted while at the tourney. Baltic is a 6-8, 205 pound player out of Park Hill South HS in Riverside, MO. He’s said to have good intensity, with a decent mid-range game and passing skills according to his Scout.com profile.

Work starting on 2009 recruiting class…plus some good news

August 5, 2008 by Bret Nellor, under 2008 Recruiting Class, 2009 Recruiting Class, Recruiting.

The Omaha World Herald reported today that Nebraska offered a scholarship to Brandon Ubel of Overland Park, KS for 2009. Ubel is a 6-8 forward with strong perimeter shooting skills and attends Blue Valley West High. He has had light recruiting interest so far.

Coach Sadler must see something in him and it appears that the Huskers may have an “in” since his sister runs track at Nebraska.

The Huskers received some good news regarding incoming recruit Eshaunte “Bear” Jones as he has passed through the NCAA clearinghouse and will be eligible for the upcoming season. His eligibility is not as crucial to the upcoming season as the team has very good depth in the backcourt but this is still a good sign. No news yet on incoming recruit Christopher Niemann’s eligibility.
