Huskers looking at Carrick Felix for 2010 class

January 27, 2010 by Bret Nellor, under 2010 Recruiting Class, News, Recruiting, Video.

Nebraska Coach Doc Sadler has stated recently that he’s interested in recruiting an athletic wing player to go with incoming junior college transfer Andre Almeida for their 2010 class. Carrick Felix fits that bill.

According to the Omaha World-Herald, Carrick Felix a 6-6 redshirt freshman at the College of Southern Idaho has been drawing attention from the Huskers. He would have 3 years to play 3. They’re hoping he can fill the athleticism/slashing void in the lineup left by Ade Dagunduro.

Felix has also been drawing attention from Duke, Idaho and Kent State.

Here’s a quick video of Felix taking part in a slam dunk contest at CSI a few months back.

Huskers pick up oral committment for 2010 class

June 7, 2009 by Bret Nellor, under 2010 Recruiting Class, News, Recruiting, Video.

Kenyon McNeaill

Doc Sadler reportedly received an oral committment from Kenyon McNeaill. McNeaill is a 6-1, 170 lb. point guard from Conway, AR who will be entering his senior year of high school this coming fall. He was in Lincoln on an unofficial visit a few days back and apparently liked what he saw. Should he officially sign with Nebraska, he would join Vander Joaquim as expected members of the 2010 recruiting class.

Sadler has rightly identified the point guard position as a position of need for his 2010 class with the departure of Cookie Miller this past spring and only Lance Jeter and Brandon Richardson on the current roster who are true point guards.

McNeaill was a member of Class 7A all-state team as a junior and was considering Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Memphis and UAB in addition to Nebraska for his college choice. Class 7A is the largest class in Arkansas. Sadler’s recruiting of McNeaill returns him to the state of Arkansas where he went to college and coached for a number of years. Obviously he knows the state well and has many contacts there.

Here are a couple of YouTube videos featuring Kenyon McNeaill:

Huskers pick up important road win over the Red Raiders

February 1, 2009 by Bret Nellor, under Husker Basketball Game Recaps, News, Video.

Ade Dagunduro

Nebraska went into Lubbock, Texas last night and put an end to a 3-game losing streak by beating Texas Tech 82-69. The win helps to renew the Huskers chances in the Big 12 improving their record to 13-7 (3-4) and into a 4-way tie for 5th in the league standings.

NU used their trademark defense and efficient shooting to build a lead as large as 17 points in the half and 18 in the second. Coach Sadler’s team shot 55.1% from the field, 45.5% from 3-point territory and 76.7% from the free throw line. Tech made strong runs at the end of each half to make it appear to be a closer game than it was. A big factor in the Huskers win was forcing 20 turnovers, which has been a weakness for the Red Raiders all season.

Ade Dagunduro again led the Huskers in scoring with 20 points, followed closely by Cookie Miller’s 19 points. Also in double figures for Nebraska was Brandon Richardson with 11 points and Sek Henry with 10 points. The 82 points Nebraska scored was the most points in a conference road game since 2004.

Turning point in the game:

  • With NU leading by 12 at the 9:49 mark in the second half, Texas Tech Coach Pat Knight brought back shades of his father, Bob Knight, with his tirade against a foul called on his team. Coach Knight stormed across the court to confront the official face to face. This led to his first technical, but that wasn’t enough for Coach Knight as he then yelled at a second official who gave him his second technical and ejection. But that still wasn’t enough. While being escorted out of the arena he suddenly turned back and and ran back on the court to yell at the officials some more.

Certainly Knight had reached a breaking point with what he saw as poor officiating but certainly he knew the only way he could get his team to fight back in the game was through this type of display. It didn’t work initially as Nebraska quickly pushed the lead to 17 points, but from then on, Tech did everything they could to get back into it. They cut the lead down to 5 points with about 3 minutes remaining but the Huskers held on down the stretch hitting converting 10 of 12 free throws to secure the win.

Encouraging items:

  • Nebraska finally took care of business down the stretch to pick up a win. This was a game that I felt NU had to win if they wanted to have a chance at post-season play. Especially after 2 straight home losses.
  • Ade Dagunduro is playing well for the Huskers scoring 20 or more points for the second consecutive game. Most importantly he hit 10-10 from the charity stripe. It doesn’t get much better than that.
  • Cookie Miller played a very good game going head to head with Tech’s John Roberson and rebounding nicely from ESPN analyst Doug Gottlieb’s “punk” comment.
  • It was nice to see such good shooting by the Huskers in a game they really needed to win. Plus, they were able to avoid the long scoring droughts which have plagued them all season. Let’s hope the offense can continue this good play into their next game.
  • Brandon Richardson, in his first extensive action in conference play, played well and hit 3 of 4 3-pointers.

I must admit, I wasn’t able to watch this game last night and was quite nervous checking in on the final score. I knew how badly the Huskers needed to get a win and how damaging it could have been had they lost. Kudos to the team and coaching staff for fighting through the difficult losses and getting after it against Texas Tech. This team still has a lot to play for and looks like they’ll continue to fight hard.

Up next: Another road game for the Huskers. They’ll travel to Boulder to face the Colorado Buffaloes on Wednesday night. This will be another winnable road game that could be very important to NU’s post-season hopes.

Video of Brandon Ubel available on Rivals

August 21, 2008 by Bret Nellor, under 2009 Recruiting Class, Recruiting, Video.

Discovered a highlight video was posted on recent Husker commit Brandon Ubel’s Rivals profile page. For some reason I was able to view it earlier today, but now it’s locked down and only available for viewing by Rivals subscribers. Or you can sign up for a free account that lasts 7 days.

From what I saw, Ubel looks like he has a good shooting touch for a big guy from outside the arc. There were a couple moments where he displayed ability to put the ball on the floor and take it at the hoop as well as some post moves, but it looks like his bread and butter is his ability to score from the outside.
