Huskers.com is sporting a refreshing, new update today. The website has a new focus on video features. You’ll be able to access free videos and if you like getting insider content the HuskersNside area will still be there for those willing to pay.
It’s a nice redesign which seems focused on giving the users better content and a better interface. Be sure to check it out!

NCAA announces 3 basketball rules changes for upcoming season
08 June '09 by Bret Nellor, under News.
The NCAA is tweaking a few rules for the 2009 basketball season. The rule changes affect blocking/charging fouls, who shoots free throws for an injured player, and expanded use of replay to determine flagrant fouls.

To me the most significant rule change is how a player is chosen to shoot free throws for a fouled player who gets injured. Rather than the shooting team’s coach choosing any player on his roster to sub in and shoot the free throws, now the opposing coach will get to choose the shooter from the remaining 4 players on the court. This will be interesting to watch once the season begins.
You can bet that Missouri coach Mike Anderson is glad this rule was not in effect this past season as the Tigers may not have won their game against the Marquette Golden Eagles in the NCAA tournament. Anderson was able to select freshman Kim English to sub for injured J. T. Tiller with 5.5 seconds remaining and the score tied at 79. English hit them both and Mizzou advanced to the Sweet 16.
The adjustment to the blocking/charging rules should have a similar effect as the “Restricted area” under the hoop in the NBA where secondary defensive players cannot attempt to take charges.

Huskers pick up oral committment for 2010 class
07 June '09 by Bret Nellor, under 2010 Recruiting Class, News, Recruiting, Video.

Doc Sadler reportedly received an oral committment from Kenyon McNeaill. McNeaill is a 6-1, 170 lb. point guard from Conway, AR who will be entering his senior year of high school this coming fall. He was in Lincoln on an unofficial visit a few days back and apparently liked what he saw. Should he officially sign with Nebraska, he would join Vander Joaquim as expected members of the 2010 recruiting class.
Sadler has rightly identified the point guard position as a position of need for his 2010 class with the departure of Cookie Miller this past spring and only Lance Jeter and Brandon Richardson on the current roster who are true point guards.
McNeaill was a member of Class 7A all-state team as a junior and was considering Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Memphis and UAB in addition to Nebraska for his college choice. Class 7A is the largest class in Arkansas. Sadler’s recruiting of McNeaill returns him to the state of Arkansas where he went to college and coached for a number of years. Obviously he knows the state well and has many contacts there.
Here are a couple of YouTube videos featuring Kenyon McNeaill:

Ryan Anderson withdraws from NBA Draft
05 June '09 by Bret Nellor, under News, Player Updates.

Ryan Anderson has withdrawn from the NBA Draft and will return to Nebraska for his senior season. According to Doc Sadler he had planned to come back to the Huskers all along.
I was thinking about Ryan Anderson today and his decision to enter the NBA draft. At that time, he stated that he has full intentions to return to Nebraska for his senior season and he simply wanted some feedback from NBA scouts. Since he declared for the draft in late April, all had been quiet in regards to his status.
I’ve been noticing other early entrants withdrawing from the draft over the past week and kept wondering when Anderson would do the same. I can’t blame him for testing the waters and pursuing his dream, but his experienced presence amid all the newcomers should hopefully help guide us to the 2010 NCAA tournament. I’m sure Coach Sadler is happy he’ll be back too.

Playing catch-up: Harley gets arrested and Cookie picks a new school
05 June '09 by Bret Nellor, under News, Player Updates.

Last weekend Steve Harley, who finished his career with the Huskers this past season, was arrested by Lincoln police under the suspicion of driving under the influence. Harley apparently tried to run from police but was caught. It’s too bad this happened, but hopefully Steve will learn from this mistake and be a better man for it.
Nebraska has been pretty fortunate over the years not having players getting into too much trouble with the law. It’s always a concern though, as you never know how a kid away from his family and home for possibly the first time in his life will react to his new surroundings.

Next up…Cookie Miller has chosen to transfer to Miami of Ohio and become a RedHawk. Miami, 17-13 last year, plays in the Mid-American Conference and is coached by Charlie Coles. Miller, chose to transfer from Nebraska after the season in order to be closer to his family in Charleston, WV.
Miller will sit out this upcoming season and then have 2 years of eligibility remaining.
Alonzo Edwards, who also chose to transfer, has signed with Lon Morris (TX) Junior College. Edwards is a Houston, TX native and will be eligible to play immediately.
Good luck to both Cookie and Alonzo.
